"People often say, with pride, I'm not interested in politics.'  They might as well say, "I'm not interested in my standard of living, my health, my job, my rights, my freedoms, my future or any future'... If we mean to keep any control over our world and lives, we must be interested in politics."    Martha Gellhorn

Discussion

Joel Beck - Candidate for Congressional District 2. Joel is running because he doesn't feel we are getting the representation when we need. A few years ago, Joel needed help with the Reno VA for denied claims, he contacted Amodei's office and they couldn't or wouldn't help him. Joel believes in listening to constituents, reading legislation and passing laws based on Constitutional law.  He believes in getting government out people's lives (spying on citizens, healthcare, education) and restoring people's freedoms. If elected, he plans to retain his VA healthcare benefits instead of the fancy Cadillac healthcare plan Congress has in place for itself. Joel's background in aviation as an aeronautical engineer has given him analytical skills to help him see several different angles of any one issue.  COVID is crippling our nation and the long-term effects are horrific. We need to get back to work. Joel is an 18-year resident of Douglas County and sees elected office as a public service position. He has no plans to be a career politician - 6 years (3 terms) is sufficient. More of Joel's positions and views can be found on his website, beckforcongress.us. He can be emailed or phoned as well. He welcomes personal calls.  joel@beckforcongress.us or 775-339-1073. He doesn't like apathy and wishes more people would participate in the process.

Bruce Parks - Nevada Patriot Meeting, Thursday, May 28, 6:00pm.  The speakers will be Barney Watley of fightfornevada.com, which led the Recall Sisolak movement, and Monica Jaye of radio fame on 99.1AM and what her perspective is on what's going on in our state/nation. While the current Recall Sisolak is dead (died May 15 due to lack of signatures), the movement is far from over. To get info on the virtual meeting, contact 1nevadapatriot@gmail.com and you will be sent a link and a password.

Bruce also mentioned that Gov Sis had the State purchased a new plane for his travels back and forth LV-Carson. Not only did that cost us $million$, but it doesn't fit in the hanger, which will have to be re-built.

There is a virtual Constitution Study Group every Wednesday, 4:00-6:00pm. It takes quite a few months to go through the Constitution and when finished, they start it all over again. They just started over about 6 weeks ago (they are on Lesson 6) and are currently learning about the historical perspective of what the Founding Fathers were looking at before the Constitutional Convention.  Again, if you wish the link to this informative and fascinating discussion, kindly email Bruce Parks at 1nevadapatriot@gmail.com.

DJ Jones, who started this Constitution group, passed away a few weeks back and his family has asked that anyone wanting to do something, in lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 14 Veterans' Way, Fernley, NV 89408 in DJ's memory.

Saturday, May 30, there is a rally urging the complete opening of the State.  11:00am, in front of the Capitol Bldg. Park at Red's Old 395 parking lot and walk up to the Capitol.

Gary Duarte - couldn't be with us today but wanted us to know United States Nuclear Energy Foundation (USNEF) is currently in talks with Heritage Foundation in DC to talk about building and managing Yucca Mountain as a Dept of Energy Public Private Partnership (PPP).  Several of Gary's Board of Directors members have already agreed to participate in moving these conversations forward.

Mike Dakic - Joel Beck's campaign manager. Mike wanted us to know Mark Amodei did not sign the Recall Sisolak petition. Very few elected officials or candidates were brave enough to sign said petition.
Carole's response: Any recall effort is a negative effort. It is sucking time, resources and energy away from what should be the real effort - to get Republicans elected to the Legislature who can hamstring the Gov from his dastardly agenda. That will happen in November and faster, more expeditiously than any recall effort. In CA, when we recalled Gray Davis, we had Arnold Schwarzenegger. Here we have no one. I personally don't blame candidates/electeds for not wanting to sign the petition.  Mike Dakic agrees to disagree.

Monte Anglin - Monte is stuck in Hawaii and can finally come back next week. He's curious what the talk is locally about reopening. Carole's response:  Gov Sis cancelled his presser for yesterday, which was supposed to announce the next phase of opening. It was cancelled because he was exposed to COVID. He will be tested next Wednesday, which, in my view, is just a way to "dither" and not have to make a commitment for another week. What a weasel!

Mark Leonard - Reno City Council voted today to pass a full budget with no cuts.  It would be good if we could have representatives or candidates from City Council come speak with us about their actions.  Problem is, City Council meets on Wednesdays, same time as we meet.
Carole's response:  What if we met at a later hour, say 3pm, just once so Councilmembers and candidates for the City Council could come on?  By a show of hands, it was decided to do that.
Dave/Sandy Norton's idea: to invite City Council and candidates to come on, letting them know we are respectful, even for people with differing ideas.

There will be a manned shuttle launch today (first one in 20 years!) that can be watched on the NASA website, NASA.gov/NASALive.  Very exciting.  Update:  Looks like the mission was scrubbed due to weather and will be Saturday, May 30, 8:00am Pacific.

Next Meeting - June 10. Whether it will be virtual or in person and whether it will be at noon or at 3pm remains to be seen. Watch for updates.
