Lincoln Day Dinner, featuring Dinesh D’Souza. Friday, Feb. 16 at the Atlantis. This will be an elegant event you won’t want to miss!  RSVP:  washoegop.org website.

Danny Tarkanian will also at Current Events Thursday, 12/14 at the Del Webb Aspen Lodge, 3:30-5:00.  Also looking for homes to host a Townhall with Danny Tarkanian.

Derek Uehara - Candidate for State Treasurer. Derek has been in Nevada since 2000 and NV has been good to him and he is looking to give back.  Definition of investing = giving up time, energy or money today for the future.  Derek is a Financial Planner and is passionate about helping others invest in their future.  The State Treasury job handles investment and educational accounts. Our educational program is an investment in our future and Derek sees a path to how we can do it all better. Please stay tuned, as Derek will be back in northern NV for our January 24 meeting and he is someone you will want to hear and meet.

Danny Tarkanian - Candidate for US Senate.  His family has been in NV for 45 years. His father was national basketball champion and his mother has worked with handicapped children. Nevada has been very good for his family. Years ago, Sen. Laxalt campaigned on one issue and you could trust and rely on his doing what he promised.  We need to repeal Obamacare/Affordable Care Act… it is NOT affordable. People coming into the US illegally is wrong. US should not be the police force for the world unless US interests are being threatened.

Mr. Tarkanian has been a Trump supporter all along. He stood for Trump when others did not. He always thought Trump would be a better President than Clinton.  Heller did not support Trump; Heller said Tarkanian couldn’t win the general (Tarkanian lost by a mere 1%).  Heller only won his last race by 1% against Shelley Berkley.

Q & A [This is not a transcript, only the best recollection and notes I have to grasp the essence of both the question and the answer. ~ Carole]

Q:  Is the current gun control bill being debated in Congress to improve background checks going to stop mass shootings?
A:  Tarkanian would be open to listen to alternative ideas, but he is not committing one way or another until he knows all the facts.

Q:  Heller has been strong on Veterans’ Affairs. What will you be able to do?
A:  Agreed that Heller has done lots for veterans. He has a phenomenal staffer in that arena, whom Tarkanian would likely ask to stay on when he wins.

Q:  Mr. Tarkanian, can you reach across the ideological aisle to attract Dem voters in order to be able to win the general election, as did Reagan and Trump?
A:  “America First” policies will span both sides of the aisle.  That and not fighting wars that don’t pose an imminent threat to the US.

Q:  How do you get through to voters who are diametrically opposed to you?
A:  Tarkanian will not allow opposing camp to smear him without responding.

Q:  Where do you stand on the $13 trillion already invested in Yucca Mountain?
A:  As a Research and Development facility, Yucca would be the biggest economic boost the state has ever seen, both economically and educationally.

Q:  How would you fix an educational system when teachers’ unions have abused everything?
A:  More competition = better product.  Educational Savings Accounts (ESAs) will never be funded by Democrats – ever.  Of the $9400 per child we spend in this state, about $5200 is from the State and $4200 is from federal assistance.  Tarkanian would like to see that $4200 federal assistance to be used in block grants to fund ESAs.  That and, English only in our schools. No more bi-lingual education, which slows the whole class down.

Q:  How do we get voters to vote for Republican State Legislators?
A:  Down-ticket voting. In 2012, the reason we won both State houses is that Gov. Sandoval ran unopposed, so there was no good reason for Dems to even show up at the polls.  Tarkanian has signed a term limits pledge and will vote against reinstating McConnell as Senate Majority Leader.

Q:  Senior Senators are allowed to nominate federal judges. Catherine Cortez Masto would be our senior Senator unless Heller wins reelection.  I don’t want her deciding our federal judges.
A: Senior Senators do not nominate federal judges, but suggest/recommend.  It’s still the President’s call as to a nomination from the list of those recommended and the confirmation process would still have to take place. Trump would just ignore Masto’s recommendations.

Q:  Where do you stand on Article 5 and the Convention of States (COS) issue?
A:  There are some important issues that can be handled in a Convention of States, such as term limits and a balanced budget.  Tarkanian knows people are opposed to other issues being stuck in a COS that wouldn’t be in our best interests. He doesn’t really understand the implications, but would welcome a discussion.

Tarkanian believes integrity, courage and conviction will carry him.  But his opponent already has much more of a war chest than does he.  “Ten for Tark” is a monthly commitment of $10 at www.tarknv.com.  And anything else you can do to spread the word is very much appreciated.

No one should pre-judge Roy Moore.  It is up to the voters of Alabama, yet Heller came out immediately urging Roy Moore to get out of the race.

Q:  No one has addressed an EMP and how it could really devastate our nation. We are so vulnerable, especially against North Korea.
A:  Let’s sit down afterward and discuss.

Lynn Chapman – still has just a few Freedom Calendars left for $5.  Also on Feb 23, 2018, the Independent American Party is having its state convention at the Nugget.  That evening, Carol Bundy will be the guest speaker and there will be a gun raffle.  All are welcome to the evening festivities.  Please save the date and more info will follow.

Ellen Shaw – still has Commerce Tax petitions for which she is gathering signatures. We need 40,000 signatures in Congressional District 2 by June to be able to get this issue on the ballot in November, 2018.  This just gets it on the ballot.  This is a huge issue for businesses.  Currently, only businesses that gross $4M are taxed on the gross receipts.  But the Legislature can drop that threshold to much less to snare those smaller businesses and tax their earnings regardless of the expenses needed to make those earnings.  Businesses won’t take this lying down… it will be passed on to the consumer in the way of increased cost of goods and services.  Please email Ellen to arrange to sign this petition at ellenshaw@aol.com.

Next Meeting – Wednesday, January 10, 2018, same time, same place.

Joyful Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and a Merry New Year to one and all!
